Field Trip Report Sandy Hook Saturday April 28, 2007 I had said an attentive birder could find 100+ species for their day list, and many on the trip are attentive birders and we did manage to find about 75, but all in all the diversity of migrant land birds seemed to be a bit behind schedule. Still the spring migration was continuing nicely giving all much to look at and enjoy. Highlights included many, close up, yellow-rumped warblers, ruby crowned kinglets, blue gray gnatcatchers, rufous-sided towhees, brown thrashers, white -throated sparrows, with lesser numbers of palm warblers, tree swallows, merlins, green herons, sharp - shinned hawks, ospreys, and also individual sightings of American bittern, indigo bunting and snowgoose. Several members made the trip north for a wonderful day. There was a slight problem for some finding lot K because there was nothing to designate it as such. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused some of you. Most of us birded throughout the morning and then some ventured off to explore historic Fort Hancock while the rest continued birding. The weather was pleasant and bugs were no problem. The only difficulties any of us faced was deciding where to go and what to see next! I would like to personally thank all who attended. Your participation in the field trip was very much appreciated and I had a most enjoyable day and I'm sure everyone else did as well. I look forward to seeing you all out on the birding trail again soon. Until then good birding, |
