Medford Leas Field Trip:

On July 7th we re-visited Medford Leas for our 4th consecutive butterfly trip. Past years have provided us with species totals of 23,27,& 30. This year would prove to be more challenging. No, make that frustrating! We were able to find only 15 species. The most abundant ones being Red Admiral ( Good year for this migrant ), and Cabbage White. Total numbers of butterflies were far below what we usually find at this location. Was it weather related?, Gypsy moth spraying?. It's hard to tell with just one day's observation. Butterfly populations fluctuate dramatically.
Despite the lack of butterflies, we all had a good time. I always enjoy the peaceful pursuit of watching butterflies, whether alone or with a group of friends. The "butterfly of the day" was the Olive Juniper Hairstreak found by Joan Ziegler. Always a nice bug to find! Thanks to all who joined us. Next year I hope to try a different location.
Keep your eyes open: You might be surprised what will fly thru your garden. Twice this month I was fortunate to have a Pipevine Swallowtail visit my Lantana. The irridescent blue on this bug has to be seen to be appreciated. Breathtaking! Recently I discovered a Hayhurst Scallopwing caterpillar on some Lamb's quarters.
So keep your eyes open and your binoculars handy.
